There was a lot the Chicago Cubs can take away from their series against the San Francisco Giants. First of all, they took the World Series champs into extra innings yesterday. However, it was a game that should have been won by the Northsiders. In the eighth inning, Giants’ reliever, Jeremy Affeldt walked three out of four batters to load the bases. All the Cubs managed was one run. They can work on that.
“That was as tough as any of them so far,” Cubs manager Dale Sveum said. “We’ve battled. Everybody’s battled to the end. But we’re just having trouble shutting a game down. Our bullpen just can’t seem to finish off any games.”
It was nice to see a Starlin Castro home run and I gotta tell you, I wasn’t impressed with Nate Shierholtz in Spring Training, but every game he impresses me more and more. That continued yesterday when he hit one into the bleachers allowing Alfonso Soriano to score. Keep it up, Nate.
Alfonso Soriano showed there’s still some life in the legs going 2-4 yesterday. It was a tough series, but I still think the Cubs are going to be all right.
The Cubs have today off before Ron Washington and the Texas Rangers come to town on Wednesday.
