Alfonso makes an easy catch on a beautiful day at Wrigley Field.

It was a very close game. Travis Wood kept the Cubs in th e game but it wasn’t enough as the Pittsburgh Pirates downed the Cubs 2-0 yesterday at a sunny Wrigley Field.

“Travis has been the same all year,” Darwin Barney said. “He’s been consistent, pounding the zone. When he’s pitching, it’s fun to play behind him, because you know he’s throwing strikes.”

Francisco Liriano was impressive yesterday.

“When his velocity is good, he’s basically in the CC Sabathia category,” Dale Sveum said. “He has good velocity but he doesn’t throw his fastball that much. He has command of his changeup, his slider, and he’s always throwing the ball below your knees.”

Liriano didn’t give up any hits until the sixth inning. That’s pretty good and it’s hard to beat a pitcher when he’s on his game. That’s exactly what happened to the Cubs yesterday. They got beat plain and simple.

“You just tip your cap to Liriano,” Barney said. “You can’t let him be one of those guys who starts a slump for hitters. He has been making his pitches.”

Yesterday’s game marked the beginning of 11 of their next 14 games against divisional rivals. It’s make or break time for the Cubs! Let’s get some runs!

So, the Pirates have played the Cubs tough all season. Today, Jeff Samardzija goes up against AJ Burnett at 4:05 eastern. I have a feeling it’s going to be another tough game.
