Cubs Sweep Mets…Again!

Chicago Tribune

It’s not that big of a deal, but sweeping the season series against the Mets for the first time in like a kazzilion (1885) years is a huge moral victory for the club.  I think they’ll take the win over the history books any day.

The truth is the Cubs played extremely well over the Mets and part of the equation is Jake Arrieta. He continues to make a case for “Ace” label, in fact he’s the Cubs best pitcher this year. Yesterday, the Cubs beat the Mets 6-1.

“I can’t sit here and tell you we bludgeoned them,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said after completing the sweep. “It’s going to work for them. They’ve got some really talented young players too.”

We all know that the Cubs are a good team, but need a little extra something to become that great team. With their dominance over the Mets coming on the heels of a humiliating loss to St. Louis, it’s showing that the Cubs have the determination to come back and in many ways, are similar to the Cardinals that they find ways to win.

“I think the only thing we need to do is use this series for positive reinforcement. Letting everybody in here know that we can beat anybody. We can pitch with anybody. We can swing the bats. Our defense can play lights out. We just have to bring that night in and night out.” Jake Arrieta said.

I’m going to go out on a limb to say that Starlin Castro is the key to many of the Cubs victories. Whenever Starlin plays well, the Cubs usually win. Sure, Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant can have great games but when the “Kid” who everyone loves to hate does his job, the Cubs win. He hustled the bases again and the end result? See Starlin, it does work.

“Every manager has their different things. But everybody likes players when they hustle. We try to hustle every day — that’s how we play baseball,” Castro said. “It’s important, especially when you are struggling, to do whatever you can to get that hit.”

What does Joe Maddon think?

“Give him credit,” Maddon said.
